In today’s modern world, with so many demands and so many technological distractions, the idea of sitting down to Sunday dinner seems to have fallen by the wayside. However, should we have let it? We don’t think so. Here are some reasons to have Sunday dinners with your family.

Reconnect with your kids

How many times have you asked your children “what did you do today” and received “nothing” in return? A lot, right? Sunday dinners are a dedicated time when you can talk to your kids without them running off to play video games or texting their friends (warning – this may involve having to enforce no cell phone rules). That meal is the perfect time to foster an open line of communication with them.

Make more time

Many times once you’ve taken the time to put a tradition in place it is met with resistance, but over time, you’ll see that kids do appreciate their parents planning time out with them. And, if you opt to take advantage of the Sunday dinner option, maybe that could lead to board game night! Spending time together becomes increasingly more difficult as kids grow up; make time now so that you’ll have the memories later.

Enjoy the moment

Sundays are the day of rest, but for some it just signals the beginning of another work week. This feeling can make you concentrate purely on preparation and removes the element of living in the moment. We aren’t saying that you shouldn’t spend Sunday food-prepping healthy lunches or cleaning, but we are saying that you should take some time to enjoy each other’s company. Dinner could be that time.

Break out of the cooking rut

Even when you are being diligent about eating healthy and cooking, it’s easy to fall into a comfortable food rut. The basics work, right? Well, yes, they fill you, but where is the excitement? Sunday dinners can be an exciting opportunity to make and try a new dish or a new restaurant. Who knows? Maybe jambalaya would be a big hit! You never know until you try.

Getting out of the house

As the weather turns colder, the temptation grows stronger to stay indoors. However, being indoors all winter long can get a bit depressing. If you aren’t the type who likes to cook, go out to eat with your family on Sunday. A change of scenery can do wonders! And some places even offer activities with dinner like live entertainment or games.

If you are looking for a place to start a new Sunday family dinner tradition, consider the Stagecoach Grille at Atkinson Resort & Country Club!
