our history

In the 1800s New Englanders traveling from Boston to New Hampshire and points north would find themselves on a beautiful journey through the quaint rolling hills of Atkinson, New Hampshire. Even then, leaving the hustle and bustle of the big city was a welcomed treat. In Atkinson, many a traveler by stagecoach stopped and stayed at John Merrill's Inn and Tavern. The spirit of hospitality continues on the property today as The Atkinson Resort & Country Club.

Nestled on over 400 acres in beautiful Atkinson, New Hampshire, is a multi-story, 75,000 sq. ft., majestic post and beam building that overlooks the 18 th hole of a true championship golf course.

The course opened in 1996 with a modest clubhouse. During the past several years, owner and developer Peter Lewis of The Lewis Group of Companies *, has built his vision of a beautiful resort facility, with amenities seldom seen outside the private club arena. The entire complex is open to the public for golf, lunch and dinner as well as private events in eight luxurious function rooms. Our Fieldstone Suites provide guests with on-site hotel rooms, many of which (along with the meeting rooms, the ballrooms and restaurant), overlook the golf course.

Created to serve both the corporate event market as well as the ever-growing wedding clientele, the Legacy Ballroom can serve as the setting for your next gathering. The adjoining Woodlawn Terrace provides the opportunity to combine indoor and outdoor dining events. A picturesque hillside garden surrounds a 300 sq. ft. gazebo and three dramatic water features, with 500 feet of cascading water. Our pond-side trellis area offers another place for outdoor ceremonies and photos, surrounded by colorful flower beds and shrubbery.

The interior design of the ballrooms includes unique second floor Bridal Salons that feature a balcony overlooking the ballrooms. The resort's restaurant is called The Stagecoach Grille and is open year-round for lunch and dinner, while drinks and a pub menu are served upstairs at Merrill's Tavern along with virtual golf and billiards.

Not only does the restaurant serve local clientele, but also provides an added attraction for golfers, as well as meeting planners and wedding guests alike. The adjoining Woodlawn Terrace, a 5,700 sq. ft. outdoor patio, features mahogany tables and chairs and fairway-green umbrellas, and provides al fresco dining with a birds-eye view of the 18 th green.

Merrill's Tavern was named after the original Merrill home on Prospect Circle in Atkinson, New Hampshire.  James Merrill was the first resident of Atkinson to be granted a permit to operate as a taverner.  The Merrill home was situated on the old road to Londonderry, and was a convenient resting place for weary travelers typically passing by on a Stagecoach (and hence the name Stagecoach Grille).

The facility is surprisingly accessible, yet wonderfully remote. It is just 25 miles from the Manchester, NH airport and approximately 40 minutes from Boston 's Logan Airport.

The visions of yesteryear are featured on the walls of the facility in remembrance of the spirit of hospitality that began with the Atkinson forefathers and is carried on today by the entire Atkinson Resort & Country Club staff. This unique facility is truly state-of-the art and is open to the public.
